Formaldehyde CH2O or HCHO is an organic compound. It is the simplest aldehyde, hence its systematic name methanal. The common name of the substance comes from its similarity and relation to formic acid.

Uses:

Industrial applications

Formaldehyde is commonly used to produce more complex compounds and materials. Products generated from formaldehyde include urea formaldehyde resin, melamine resin, phenol formaldehyde resin, polyoxymethylene plastics, 1,4-butanediol, and methylene diphenyl diisocyanate. The textile industry also uses formaldehyde-based resins as finishers to make fabrics crease-resistant. In automobiles, formaldehyde-based materials are  used to make components for the transmission, electrical system, engine block, door panels, axles and brake shoes.

If treated with phenol, urea, or melamine, formaldehyde produces, respectively, hard thermoset phenol formaldehyde resin, urea formaldehyde resin, and melamine resin. Each of these polymers is general abiding adhesive which finds application in carpeting and plywood. Furthermore, it finds use as the wet-strength resin. It is combined with other ingredients to make sanitary paper products like roll towels, table napkins, and facial tissue.

Pentaerythritol, a polyfunctional , which is used to make paints and  has formaldehyde as its precursor. Methylene diphenyl diisocyanate, an important component in polyurethane paints and foams, is a derivative of formaldehyde. Another formaldehyde derivative is Hexamine, which is used in phenol-formaldehyde resins.
