Hexamethylenetetramine, as the name suggests, is a heterocyclic organic compound. Its formula is (CH2)6N4. It is white in colour and is a crystalline compound, highly soluble in water and polar organic solvents. It has a cage-like structure similar to adamantane.

Uses

Hexamethylenetetramine is mainly used in the production of powdery or liquid preparations of phenolic resins and phenolic resin moulding compounds. It is added as a hardening component. These products are used as binders, e.g. in brake and clutch linings, abrasive products, non-woven textiles, formed parts produced by moulding processes, and fireproof materials.
It is used for the treatment of urinary tract infection caused due to mandelic acid salt. It decomposes at an acidic pH to form formaldehyde and ammonia. As formaldehyde is bactericidal; mandelic acid adds to this effect. This drug is particularly suitable for long-term treatment of urinary tract infection, as bacteria do not develop resistance to formaldehyde.

In histology, the following types of  Methenamine silver stains are used for staining :

Grocott's methenamine silver stain is widely as a screen for fungal organisms.
Jones' stain, a methenamine silver-Periodic acid-Schiff that stains for basement membrane, availing to view the "spiked" Glomerular basement membrane associated with membranous glomerulonephritis.

It is also used as Solid fuel. Hexamethylenetetramine, together with 1, 3, 5-trioxane is a component of hexamine fuel tablets. It is used by campers, hobbyists, military and relief organizations for heating camping food or military rations. It burns smokeless, has a high energy density (30.0 MJ/kg), does not liquefy while burning, leaving no ash behind.

Fire-protection laboratories use standardized 0.149 g tablets of methenamine (hexamine) as a clean and reproducible fire source to test the flammability of carpets and rugs.

Hexamethylene tetramine or hexamine is also used as a food additive and preservative (INS number 239). It has the approval for use in EU, listed under E number E239. But, Hexamine does have the approval in Australia, USA, and New Zealand.

Hexamethylenetetramine is the base component to produce Oktogen, Dinitrohexamine and HMTD.
