Product Description

Potassium permanganate is an inorganic compound. It is a strong oxidizing agent with disinfectant, deodorising and astringent properties. It is sometimes called by its common name Condy's crystals or permanganate of potash.

Usage:

  • Due to its oxidizing properties and the fact that it does not generate by-products, potassium permanganate has a wide range of applications.
  • Potassium permanganate is widely used in the film and television industries to "age" props and set dressings. Its oxidising effects wears down hessian cloth, ropes, timber and glass and create the look of tattered old setting.
  • Potassium permanganate is a mild antiseptic with astringent properties. Diluted solutions are used to treat canker sores (ulcers), and pompholyx, dermatitis and fungal infections of the hands or feet.
  • It is used extensively to treat water. It acts as a regeneration chemical and helps remove iron and hydrogen sulfide from well water through a "Manganese Greensand" Filter.
  • Potassium permanganate was formerly used to disinfect drinking water and is currently used to control the growth of microorganisms such as Zebra mussels in fresh water collection and treatment systems.
  • It is also used as a reagent in the synthesis of ascorbic acid, saccharin, isonicotinic acid, and pyrazinoic acid.
  • It is also used in the preservation of fruits. Packing bananas in polyethylene with potassium permanganate (an ethylene absorbent) doubles a banana's lifespan up to 3–4 weeks without the need for refrigeration. Ethylene released by the bananas helps it to ripen;  conversely, by removing ethylene through oxidation, the bananas' ripening can as well be delayed.
  • Potassium permanganate also finds its place in survival kits as a fire-starter ( mixed with glycerin or antifreeze from a car radiator), water sterilizer, and for creating distress signals on snow.
  • Its analytical use includes quantitative determination of the total oxidisable organic materials in an aqueous solution. The value determined is known as permanganate value. In analytical chemistry, a standardized aqueous solution of potassium permanganate is sometimes used as an oxidizing titrant for redox titrations (permanganometry).
  • It is also used as a reagent to determine the Kappa number of wood pulp.
  • Aqueous, acidic solutions of potassium permanganate are used to collect gaseous mercury in flue gas during stationary source emissions testing.
