Seaweed Extract

The term seaweed encompasses macroscopic, multicellular, benthic marine algae. It includes some of the members of the red, brown and green algae. Seaweeds can be classified on the basis of their use (as food, medicine, fertilizer, filtration, industrial, etc.). Unlike algae, seaweed are not plants.

There are several purposes, for which seaweed is farmed or foraged from the wild.

In East Asia, e.g., Brunei, Japan, China, Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam, but also in South Africa, Indonesia, Malaysia, Belize, Peru, Chile, the Canadian Maritimes, Scandinavia, South West England, Ireland, Wales, California, Philippines, and Scotland, seaweeds are consumed as food by coastal people.
In Asia, dried sheets of seaweed are used in soups and to wrap sushi. Chondrus crispus (commonly known as Irish Moss or carrageenan moss) is a red alga which is used to produce various food additives, along with Kappaphycus and various other seaweeds. In Wales, Porphyra, a kind of red algae is used to make laver. In northern Belize, edible seaweeds are mixed with milk, nutmeg, cinnamon, and vanilla to make a common beverage, locally known as "Dulce" (or "sweet").

Seaweeds are extensively harvested or cultivated to extract alginate, agar and carrageenan, gelatinous substances known as hydrocolloids or phycocolloids collectively. The food industry makes use of their gelling, water-retention, emulsifying and other physical properties. Carrageenan, also a type of seaweed, is used in salad dressings and sauces, dietetic foods, and to preserve meat and fish products, dairy items and baked goods.

Alginates are used to dress wounds and to produce dental moulds. In microbiology research, agar, a gelatin-like substance, made from seaweed - is extensively used as culture medium. Carrageenans, alginates and agaroses which is prepared from agar by purification, together have several important biological applications or are used in biomedicine.

Seaweed is a potent source of iodine, essential for the functioning of thyroid and to prevent goitre. However, in Japan, an excess of iodine is suspected to heighten the risk of cancer who consume a lot of the plant, and even bigger risks in post-menopausal women.

Seaweeds are also known to have curative properties for the treatment of tuberculosis, arthritis, colds and influenza, worm infestations and even tumors.

Seaweed extract has also found its place as an ingredient in some diet pills. Seaweed pills produce the effect of gastric banding, expands in the stomach to make the body feel more full.
